Your Dark Passenger

Our childhood shapes us all. We all have varying degrees of emotional maturity and understanding but have you thought about how it effects you in front of the charts? Can you recognize that feeling creeping over you, that moment when your Dark Passenger takes the wheel and you do exactly what you’ve promised yourself you would “never do again”!

It can be difficult to see that our current actions can be rooted in the past. The first step is to give it a name. Dexter, from the Showtime cult classic of the same name, called it his “Dark Passenger” and while his often resulted in the flow of blood we have our own kind of red in trading and it’s none to pretty to look at.

Let’s dissect this with an example so we all can start to recognize and name our Dark Passenger. Imagine a young child who’s mother is never satisfied with their results in school. Now this child is very bright and does extremely well. They work tirelessly at achiveing good grades being the best student they can but their mother always dismisses the accomplishments and points out only the flaws.

This child grows into an adult, has a great career in the sciences and then starts to day trade. Like everything in their life they focus and work hard at it to please their Dark Passenger. The day finally comes and they go live. At first, success is slow but they eventually start to see real gains but their is a problem they can’t get past. A pattern where their Dark Passenger takes over and they never even realize it.

It seems they can never keep their gains. They sit down day after day and follow their edge. Almost 70% of every day by 10:30 am they hit their goal but they can’t stop trading! They hit their goal and almost instantly their Dark passenger takes the wheel because it’s never good enough! Their Dark Passenger won’t let them be satisfied with the green, it needs more and the more turns into a flow of red days after days. Their account starts to look like a homicide crime scene with the red days stacking up like bodies.

Can you recognize anything in this example about your trading? Do you have a Dark Passenger that is killing your account? The first step is to recognize and name it. Create new habits that will let a little light in and keep your darkness at bay. Don’t let the darkness creep in!
